Halder, a burly sixteen-year-old recruit at Castle Black, was born in a quarry and apprenticed as a stonemason before taking the black. His powerful build and hard, unpolished fighting style earned him the mocking nickname "Stone Head" from Ser Alliser Thorne, the venomous master-at-arms. In the practice yard, Halder was initially one of Jon Snow's most formidable opponents, his blows described as "brutally hard" and his strength a constant threat. Yet for all his raw power, Halder was short of patience and had no taste for defense, a weakness Jon learned to exploit by frustrating him until he left himself open.

Arc Through the Training Yard

Halder's relationship with Jon Snow shifted from rivalry to alliance when Ser Alliser Thorne ordered him to brutalize the terrified new recruit Samwell Tarly. He joined the others in reciting the Night's Watch oath, reminding Jon of the words he had sworn, and when Jon's resolve faltered, Halder helped escort him back to the castle.
